    History of France
In about 600 b.c. ,Greeks and Phoenicians established settlements along the Mediterranean, most notably at Marsielle. Julius Ceaser conquered part of Gaul in 57-52 B.C., and it remained Roman until Franks invaded in the 5th century A.D.In the year 843 the Treaty of Verdun created a territory called Western Francia, which was the precursor to modern France. Several noble families ruled France until the monarchy was overthrown during the French Revolution in 1798 ( a war that was the basis for the film Marie Antoinette). About 10 years after the revolution, a guy named Napoleon Bonaparte seized control of France, declaring himself the Emperor of France. He waged several wars and conquered a good portion of Europe before being defeated at the Battle of Waterloo
Louise I- In 813 he became co-emperor with his father, then, when Charlemagne died a year later, he inherited the empire.

    ...
The Westminster government in London is the government for the whole of the UK and as such maintains the right to legislate over a number of other matters, such as defence. These are called reserved matters.
In 2010, the current Scottish Government will present a bill to the Scottish Parliament asking for a referendum on full independence. If the bill gets through parliament and the Scottish people vote yes in the referendum this would give Scotland the same type of government as every other sovereign country in the world, as opposed to the current situation where the Westminster government can still dictate certain matters.
